Hidden Factor

What makes a dwelling or working place truly pleasant feeling? Why are many such places feel nasty ?… The answer lies in the -'Space' which is the hidden factor in architecture.Space has three levels- Maha Akasha ,the Universal space, the second one is Griha Akasha , The space contained by four walls and the roof. The third is Ghata Akasha means the space contained by vessel-the human body ( in sanskrit grata means -vessel) that is in the micro level. The Universal space is Macro level. The Space contained by four walls and roof ( Griha-akasha ) is in-between which is borrowed from the Universal space. When there is harmony at all these three levels, then only the growth, health, joy are possible for the user.

Our ancients devised mathematical formula for dwelling or working places called Ayadi-Shad-Varga. These are group of six proportions.. In the planning of the building, or a city the most important consideration is-Length and Breadth or length, breadth and height.. These two or three factors must in harmony. They should belong to each others. For each dimensions they allowed laxity. If one proportion or dimension was not suitable, then they authorized plus-minus increments. There are set of six, nine or eleven formulae. In our Sacred Space methodology we deal with humanized scale. The measurement is taken of the forearm along with fingers called 'Cubit or Hastam'as the unit scale. This Humanized scale bring harmony between man and his space. Mostly we use seven- vargas for sites, buildings and interiors. These formulae involve mathematical calculations.,for example Aya ( income ) is 8 divided by 12. After division what is in balance is reminder. We just concerned with reminder. If somebody has lost his first rank by 1 mark , this 1 mark is his reminder to conquer. In order to conquer he must go through great deal of hardship and this 1 mark is quite difficult to gain. Hence the reminder is given great importance. They are-

  • AYA-( INCOME)- 8/12

  • VYAYA-( EXPENDITURE) -9/10

  • AYU-( AGE OF HARMONY ) - 27/100

  • VARNA-( SPACE IMPACT ON HUMAN PSYCH ) - 9/4

  • YONI-(TRANSMIGRATION IMPACT) - 3/8

  • VARA-(DAY) - 9/7

  • TITHI-(DATE)- 9/30

In Vastu terminology each dimension or the area is multiplied and divided by these formulae, and the reminder is what we consider. To make plan harmonious the all dimension have to go through these formulae.

These dimensions must be proportionate to generate happiness and joy for the inhabitant. The Ayadi Shad-varga denotes the horoscope of the Vastu and human beings. These formulae are the guiding factors for prosperity of human beings. The master designer architect can change the horoscope of the artifact he designs, by giving due attention to the Shad-Varga calculations for proportionate dimension of the habitat space.
